Couples who fall in love and wish to be re-united together in Australia can apply for the Prospective Marriage visa or the Partner visa.

For the Partner visa, couples need to be in a marital or de facto relationship. Alternatively, couples who are engaged can apply for the Prospective Marriage visa, which is also known as the fiancé(e) visa. These wonderful couples will need to be in a genuine and continuing relationship.

By having that extra step in the relationship, loving couples will have more time to plan and prepare for their wedding in Australia. Specifically, the applicant can stay in Australia for a period of 9 to 15 months.

Couples must be married to each other before the visa period ends and the applicant will then need to apply for the Partner visa to remain in Australia.

Basic Eligibility

Firstly, the sponsor must be:

  • an Australian citizen
  • an Australian permanent resident
  • an eligible New Zealand citizen

Secondly, the applicant must:

  • be at least 18 years of age
  • apply for the visa while outside Australia

Generally, the sponsor and applicant must:

  • show that since turning 18 years of age that the sponsor and applicant have met each other face to face
  • demonstrate the relationship is genuine and continuing and there is a mutual commitment between the partners to a shared life as spouses to the exclusion of all others
