If you have met that wonderful person, you and this person will need to be married or live in a de facto relationship to apply for this visa, which is often known as a spouse visa or a de facto visa.
Generally, the Partner visa is a two-step process and allows the applicant to apply for the temporary visa, which allows the applicant to work, study and/or travel and then subsequently to apply for a permanent visa after two years from the date of lodgment of the temporary visa.
Basic Eligibility
Firstly, the sponsor must be:
- an Australian citizen
- an Australian permanent resident
- an eligible New Zealand citizen
Secondly, the applicant must be:
- at least 18 years of age
Generally, the sponsor and applicant must demonstrate:
- a marital or a de facto relationship
- the relationship is genuine and continuing with a mutual commitment between the partners to a shared life as spouses (or the equivalent) to the exclusion of all others
